2008 we held our first Ride in the Rocks event and it was a smashing success for riders, and organizers. In Lucerne Valley we have the perfect terrain and the perfect weather, it is hard to go wrong with a combination like that.
2009 did more of the same. We have slightly lengthened the Challange Course to take out that long stretch of pavement, replacing it with a beautiful new section of single track, see Challange map.
If you like rocks, and sand washes, cactus and Joshua trees and best of all clear blue skies and pristine air, then this is the ride for you. In the High Desert we have October temperatures in the high seventies that help to extend our riding weather deep into the fall season.
2009 we still had the Tame 10 mile course for those not into extreme riding. See Tame Ten Map. We also added a Five Mile Run/Walk course for those who like to feel the ground beneaththeir feet. See Five Mile Run/Walk map.
Ride in the Rocks took place in the scenic little town of Lucerne Valley, California. We are located just 30 miles north of Big Bear Lake, and 102 miles northeast of Los Angeles.

Where: Directions from LA: Take the I-10 S toward San Bernardino to the I-15 North toward Las Vegas, through the cajon pass, take exit #147 to Bear Valley Road east toward Apple Valley / Lucerne Valley. Stay on Bear Valley Road 12.5 miles, merge onto Highway 18 east, go 11 miles to four-way stop. Turn left on Barstow Road/Hwy 247, go 1.8 miles turn right on Rabbit Springs Road, the Lucerne Valley Middle/High School is .6 miles, turn right just past the east corner of the school parking lot onto Ladera Road and follow the signs to the registration area and starting line.
When: Sign-in takes place 6:00 - 7:30 am on Saturday October 17, 2009. The 21 mile riders will depart at 8:00, the 10 mile riders at 8:05 and the 5 mile runner/walkers at 8:10.
Who: This bike ride will accommodate all levels of expertise. Casual touring cyclists and families will enjoy the Tame Ten mile course, with the majority of this ride on broad well-maintained and lightly traveled dirt access roads, with one small strech utilizing the old Bear Valley gold mine road. The 21 mile course is for those looking for a challenge who will enjoy intense desert trails of sand, rock, and hill climbs.
Cost: 21 mile Challange course $40.00, Tame Ten mile $25.00, Five Mile run/walk $25.00. Entry fee covers ride, lunch and t-shirt if paid for before October 1, 2009 deadline. After the deadline lunch and t-shirts will depend on how many participants have signed up, as to how many we have left. Entry fee also increases by $10.00 after deadline. Please click on brochure for pdf entry form and additional information. Team discounts are also available - Team of 4 $120.00, Team of 6 $170.00. Team prices go up $20.00 after deadline.
Safety: Safety and fun are our top concern for all participants. Therefore, helmets are required, and riders are expected to obey all traffic regulations. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and the Citizens on Patrol (COPs) will be assisting at all highway crossings. Riders under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a legal guardian rider/runner/walker.
Support: Out of this World BBQ will once again provide lunch of barbecued chicken, pulled pork and tri-tips at the finish line. Lunch is included in the price of the ride. Break stops will be stocked with water and snacks and porta-potties. SAG vehicles will be roving the routes to assist with minor mechanical problems, first-aid, and fatigue. There will also be a bike mecanic available before the ride.
T-Shirts: The first 200 riders will receive a commemorative t-shirt. No guarantees if you do not pre-register.
Hotels are located 35 miles away in the communities of Big Bear Lake, and Victorville. For those who like to camp, grass for tents, and dry parking for RVs will be available the night before the event near the ride starting line, for no additional fee.
